The unique museum collection on permanent display at the Palace (Front) Gate complex of the Tsar’s Courtyard reveals the ‘destiny’ of the Kolomenskoe royal village and tells the history of this place from ancient times to the beginning of the XX century.

The display comprises archaeological items discovered at the village of Kolomenskoe and dating back to different centuries, documents, icons, old weapons, handcrafts, clothes, furniture and other interior items of the Moscow Grand Dukes’, Russian Tsars’ and Emperors’ epochs as well as monarchs’ portraits.

You will see:

  • a XIV century ‘spiritual deed’ (i.e. will), the first document mentioning Kolomenskoe, written by Moscow Duke Ivan Kalita (a.k.a. Ivan I of Moscow);;
  • a model of the Palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich referred to by contemporaries as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ and reconstructed in 2010 in the southern part of Kolomenskoe;
  • one of the largest collections comprising fragments of white stone carving that used to decorate Moscow buildings in the XVII - XVIII centuries. Architectural décor details were gathered by the first Director of the Kolomenskoe Museum, Peter Baranovsky.

You will find out:

  • that Kolomenskoe is one of the most ancient places of human habitation on the territory of modern Moscow;
  • how Kolomenskoe gradually developed into a gala residence of the Russian monarchs;
  • how a museum was created at the village of Kolomenskoe on the initiative of Peter Baranovsky, architect and restorer.
