Cast-iron fountain

Izmailovo

The fountain was cast at the same time with the Cast-iron Arch. It was installed in front of the west porch of the Intercession Cathedral in the middle of the XIX century during the construction of the Nicholas’s military alms-house. It was cast at the expense of a merchant Ivan Sorokin and decorated with four bas-relief depicting lion heads.

Did you know that…

  • according to the legend, the fountain was cast by veterans who lived and worked in the Nicholas’s military almshouse
  • the lion was chosen as the fountain decoration because in the XVII century it impersonated the courage of invincible and valiant warriors

Please note: the fountain is currently under restoration.
