Peter Baranovsky, Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve first director, would call the Mokhovaya Tower the last surviving wooden battle tower in the European part of Russia.

In the XVII century, the tower made part of the fortress system in the Karelian part of Pomorye (White Sea coast). By the early XX century, it became the only surviving tower of the local fort and in 1931, it was transported to Kolomenskoe. Yet, it had to wait for restoration for more than 70 years: a corresponding project was presented only in 2005. And the completely restored tower, now part of the Museum of Wooden Architecture, received visitors in 2008.

The restored Mokhovaya Tower houses a permanent exhibition about the Streltsy - an Old Russian privileged army of guardsmen. Here you will learn about the guardsmen’s everyday life and customs, see their weapons as well as study the tower’s interior designed to maintain successful defense.
