Front gate

Izmailovo

The gala Front Gate of the Tsar’s Courtyard is located opposite the western entrance to the Intercession Cathedral. In front of them, on stone pillars there stood the Streltsy guardsheds covered with ‘two layers of batten and birchbark’ and decorated with carved and painted balusters.

The gate is brickwork with white stone details. It is rectangular in plan and has a three-span passage. From the north and south, it is adjoined by one-story stone buildings - former residential houses and offices of functionaries of the alms-house opened on Izmailovo Island in the XIX century.

The architectural appearance of the gate combines the features of traditional Russian architecture and the Baroque style popular in European countries in the XVII-XVIII centuries.
