Savior Gate

Kolomenskoe

The Savior (Back) Gate was built in the 1670s together with the walls of the Tsar's Courtyard and served as the entrance to the household part of the palace estate. The gate was named in honor of the Savior-Made-without-Hands icon placed in a small image case above the arch on the outside of the gate.

As well as the Front Gate, the Savior Gate has two passages: one intended for walking through and the other for carriages. The form of the gate roofing is traditional for the XVII century: a longitudinal "figured" barrel-vault is crossed by two transverse ones. In comparison with the Front Gate, the décor of the Savior Gate is quite simple: the brickwork is mostly plastered, only the arch lines and the frieze under the cornice stand out.

In 2001-2003, the Moscow State Integrated Museum-Reserve staff carried out full-scale restoration of the Savior Gate. In 2007, the Streltsy guardhouses were restored. In the guardhouses you can find a cash register and a gift shop.
