Sytny Yard: bldg 3A, 39 Prospekt Andropova

On 18 May, the International Museum Day, Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve opens its anniversary year top exhibition

This large-scale exhibition open at the Sytny Yard gets together items from the museum depository that all have unique artistic, historical and memorial value. Visualizing the museum collection’s history, its presents true masterpieces.

‘‘The Kolomesnkoe Museum collection has a distinct identity and particular value that make it stand out from the entire Russian museums treasury. The anniversary project presents about 280 exhibits (out of the total museum collection counting over 170,000 items), many of which are for the first time on display. The museum’s Old Russian icon painting, notably Russian saints’ images with cityscapes and monasteries on the background, can be regarded as unique. The earliest exhibits from this collection date back to the XVI century. The museum’s handwritten and old printed books collection includes XVI century examples published by the Russian printing pioneers Ivan Feodorov and Andronicus the Ignorant and making part of the world cultural legacy. The collection of iconostases Holy Doors from non-extant churches’ that you can see on display makes an excellent example of ornamental painting, gilded wood carving and metalwork. As a symbol of the project, its iconic exhibit, you will see a personal brief case of Peter Baranovsky, the Kolomenskoe Museum founder and first director. We can figuratively say that all our museum collection treasures came out of it as a magic fairytale chest.’

Olga Polyakova, Chief Keeper of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve

We recommend visiting the exhibition together with a guide, as part of a group tour — so getting to know the exhibits will become even more exciting.

The display starts with the section focusing on the religious art objects saved in the 1920s-1930s. The icons, wood carving items and archive documents will altogether tell how the museum collection started and by what various ways the exhibits came to Kolomenskoe. The Russian art objects saved from destruction made the core of our collection. The exhibition would not be complete without a section focusing on the royal residence days. It tells about the life of the Russian Tsars’ country residence at Kolomenskoe in the XVII – XVIII centuries. Here you will see surviving items from the authentic Palace of Tsar Alexey Romanov, a grand-charter given by his son Tsar Feodor III as well as icon painting masterpieces created for the Tsar by Moscow Kremlin Armoury masters. The silverware created by masters in Augsburg and Ulm, Germany, as well as in Sweden, touches on the theme of ambassadorial gifts and adds much to the display’s beauty. The display ends with a section showing palace interior décor of the XVIII – XX centuries. In this part of the exhibition you will see a unique collection of glass art, including uranium (light green) and ‘gold ruby’ glass items, the XIX century classical painting, furniture sets, costume, fans and French bronze. Besides, the exhibition will show XVII – XX century art objects that were granted to the museum in 2022 by actor Andrey Shavel.
