MORE THAN A CENTENARY

On February 10, 2023, the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve turns 100 years old

This year, we are celebrating the centenary, but Kolomenskoe is much older than 100 years. This place was first mentioned in 1336 in the spiritual charter of Prince of Moscow Ivan Kalita, but people lived here more than 2000 years ago. Kolomenskoe remembers Ivan the Terrible and the Romanov dynasty... This place is more than a museum, and more than a nature reserve.

In the anniversary year, thematic exhibitions, excursions and a whole series of outdoor events will be presented.

The program of the centennial year will be updated with new events — follow the news on this page.

MARINA LYULCHUK, DIRECTOR OF MGOMZ:

‘Kolomenskoe is a place with its own tone, culture and history. Here you can travel from the present to the distant past and find yourself outside the city within its limits. But time has not stood still at Kolomenskoe: the museum-reserve is living and constantly developing. The museum collection counts more than 170,000 exhibits and is being replenished. We open new exhibitions, organize guided tours and learning programs for schoolchildren. We are trying to do everything to make it comfortable and interesting for anyone who wants to be out of time for a while, at one with nature.’

MORE THAN THE FOUNDER

Pyotr Baranovsky is the founder and the first director of the Kolomenskoe museum. He was an architect and restorer of monuments of Old Russian architecture.

Baranovsky explored hundreds of monuments of traditional architecture from the White Sea to Azerbaijan. Contemporaries called him “the great enthusiast of the Russian land” and “the Habakkuk of XX century.”

TOP EXHIBITIONS

We have planned 39 exhibitions for 2023. 5 of them will be dedicated to the centenary of the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve.

The main exhibition of the year ‘Kolomenskoe. The masterpieces of the collection’ will open in May and present the authentic treasures of Russian and European art collected by the museum for over 100 years of its history.

At the exhibition ‘10 days from the life of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve’ you will learn about the main stages of the museum’s development. You will see documents related to its history and the people who made the preservation of monuments and museum collections the main principle of their life. The exhibition will open in April.

Spring exhibition ‘Kokoshnik. Beauty Traditions’ will demonstrate a variety of types of Russian women’s hats of XVIII-XIX centuries.

The exposition ‘A poem about a heroine. Anna Akhmatova at Kolomenskoe’ that will open in August is dedicated to one of the main admirers of Kolomenskoe in the XX century — the great poetess Anna Akhmatova.

More than jewelry

Especially for the centenary of Kolomensky, graduates of the British Higher School of Design have developed 15 jewelry collections. Accessories based on natural, architectural and stock objects will be phased out throughout the year.

The spring premiere was the Apple Blossom and Oak Grove collections, inspired by the historical apple orchards and century-old oaks of Kolomenskoye. All decorations are handmade and can be a great gift for a birthday or any other occasion.

THEMATIC GUIDED TOURS

Especially for the centenary, we have prepared 3 new guided tours. You will be able to visit them according to the schedule, as part of a group.

From February 1, the guided tour ‘Kolomenskoe: how it all started (the museum 100 years ago)’. It will tell you about the activities of the architect Pyotr Baranovsky, who made every effort so that the former royal residence obtained the status of a museum.

The walking tour ‘Meet Kolomenskoe’ will take place all summer. Visiting it, you will be able to partially follow the path that the Moscow sovereigns of the XVI–XVII centuries made — from the pier on the Moskva River to the historical territory of the Tsar’s Courtyard.

Those who prefer outdoor activities will have the opportunity to combine bike ride and acquaintance with the history, architecture and nature of the museum-reserve on the tour ‘Travel by bicycle. Dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the museum.’ It took place from the beginning of June to the end of August.

Postage Stamp

For the centenary of the museum-reserve, the Marka publishing house issued a postage stamp depicting the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, the main architectural masterpiece of Kolomenskoye.

The stamp with a face value of 150 rubles depicts a winter view of the church. In addition to the release, first-day envelopes were issued with a portrait of the founder and first director of the museum in Kolomenskoye, Pyotr Baranovsky, and a special cancellation stamp for Moscow was made.
