Kolomenskoe: how it all started (the museum 100 years ago)

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye entered the history of Russia as the patrimony of the great Moscow princes and the royal residence. A unique architectural ensemble has developed here, which forms the basis of the modern museum-reserve.

The complex of the Sovereign's Court in Kolomenskoye, rare in terms of safety, surrounded by the famous royal gardens, in the era of violent upheavals that swept the country in the first half of the 20th century, could have expected a completely different fate. But it so happened that thanks to the efforts of the architect Pyotr Baranovsky, this estate, which occupies a special place in the history of not only Moscow, but also Russia, received the status of a museum, and Baranovsky himself became its founder and first director.

Our story about the history of the formation of the museum-reserve will be a revelation even for those who consider themselves to be its connoisseur. On the basis of archival documents, it will become clear in what neglected state the ancient monuments of architecture were and how they were used for various economic needs, far from their original purpose. Of particular interest will be the history of the relationship between the museum, or rather, its director Pyotr Baranovsky and church communities at churches in Kolomenskoye and Dyakovo. And how common sense managed to defeat the bureaucracy.

As part of the tour, you will take a walk in the area of the Sovereign's Court and see the Church of the Ascension, the Spassky and Front Gates, the Kormovaya and Sytny Yard, the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the Palace Pavilion of 1825 from the outside.
