Prospekt Andropova 39

This permanent exhibition tells about the building trade in Old Russia.

Here you will learn about masters of various building professions (masons, carpenters, carvers) as well as a variety of building materials and techniques.

Our museum stock items, which make the core of the display (building ceramics and metal, a collection of house carving elements, decorative white stone carving of Russian churches and icons with cityscapes in the background) speak for the high technical and art skills of Russian housebuilders.

You will see:

  • works by one of the best-known XVII century glazed tile masters - Stepan, nicknamed Polubes (the Half-demon);
  • XVII - XVIII century wooden carved Holy Gates of Russian churches;
  • a fireplace made by artist Mihail Vrubel in 1899 as part of his epic series ‘Mikula Selyaninovich and Vol’ga’ (Russian epic characters).

You will find out:

  • the names of leading Moscow housebuilders of old times;
  • what instruments and technique XVI - XIX century masters used;
  • what were the main types of buildings and architectural elements in the XVI - XIX centuries.
